This week, Netflix announced that they were partnering with Dreamworks to craft an animated Voltron series that revamps the old cartoon for the modern era. The move is also probably to try and pull the brand of out movie development hell, where it’s been stuck for some time, and the theory might be that returning to its animated TV roots is the ticket to success.

It’s also drawing on the modern pop culture philosophy of “bring back anything you’ve ever heard of,” as nostalgia continues to rule supreme. Unfortunately, in doing this, I think Netflix is ignoring one modern-day property that is a slam dunk for its brand and its audience, The Legend of Korra and the entire Avatar: The Last Airbender universe.

I’ve made this argument before, but since it still hasn’t happened, I need to keep bringing it up. Netflix is always fishing for shows far and wide, especially concentrated on ones with dedicated fanbases (see the Arrested Development revival) and The Legend of Korra/The Last Airbender is prime acquisition territory for them.

To recap, Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in a universe where certain individuals have the ability to control the elements. This separates them into factions, water, fire, earth and air, but they’re united and kept in balance by one individual each generation who can control all four elements, the Avatar. The original show ran for three books (seasons), before taking a break and returning with The Legend of Korra, which featured a mostly new cast (including some of the descendants of the first show’s characters) and also ran for three seasons.

In that time, the Nickelodeon show managed to become not just one of my favorite animated shows ever, but one of my favorite shows period. And I’m not alone. The show boasts an enormous fanbase chomping at the bit to see it return, but despite its innate quality, that’s far from a guarantee.

The problem is that The Last Airbender's more grown-up sequel series, Korra, ended up floundering on Nickelodeon. Low ratings ended up having Nick yank it from the airwaves at some point, making it an entirely online affair, and infamously, budget cuts in the last season forced the showrunners to choose between letting staff go, or making a clip show to save money. Fans got a clip show.

Now, the show is once again “on break,” after its creators are not only exhausted from making the show, but also presumably dealing with Nickelodeon. The problem is, shows like The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra never really belonged on Nickelodeon in the first place. They’re sort of genre-defying, able to be enjoyed by kids, but probably best consumed by adults. Even adults who normally couldn’t care less about animated programs outside of South Park, and certainly not anime. That is obviously not Nickelodeon’s target audience, and a big reason the show floundered on air.

Meanwhile, Netflix, with its audience of literally everyone, is a perfect home for The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Jersey number font free. Both of those seasons are best binge-watched, rather than consumed week-to-week (in my estimation), and it’s the sort of high quality, nothing-else-like-it programming that the streaming service likes to seek out.

Netflix was moving in a good direction with the original animated programming for a little while, before veering in a weird direction. Bojack Horseman remains one of my favorite shows they’ve made, but now with news of this eye-rolling Voltron throwback, and new shows like Bill Burr’s excruciating F is for Family, I think they’re getting off track.

Netflix doing a deal with Viacom (who owns Nickelodeon) to take the Avatar universe off their hands seems like a no-brainer. Nickelodeon no longer has to deal with the hate of sidelining an underperforming show that never really belonged on their channel anyway. Netflix gets a brilliant animated series with a built-in passionate fanbase. The showrunners presumably get to operate under a lot less financial and ratings pressure, allowing them to expand creatively. And fans get their beloved series back.

The common thought is that if this deal went through, Avatar could return for a third series, building on the legacy of Airbender and Korra. Honestly, while this could be great, I’d also cheer the idea of more books built onto Korra specifically. That show just built up such a great cast and characters, I’d be a bit sad if their adventures were truly over. But until this deal happens, all of this is just wishful thinking, I suppose.

I am not the type of person pushing for Netflix to revive every show I ever loved. No, they don’t need to bring back Pushing Daisies or spend $100M to get the cast of Firefly back for one more miniseries. But this? This is something they could just take over from its existing owner relatively easily, and they’d be able to attach themselves to a truly high quality program that’s perfect for their wide-ranging audience. It’s anyone’s guess whether a Voltron reboot will be any good, but a Netflix-owned return to the universe of The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra with the original creators and crew? There simply isn’t any way it wouldn’t deliver.
